Using Essential Oils Safely

One problem that many people who begin with aromatherapy and the use of essential oils have is that they are not properly instructed on their use. It is crucial to remember that aromatherapy is just that, therapy. There is a science to the use of oils that you must be familiar with and precautions that you must take to ensure your own safety.

The most important rule of thumb is to never apply undiluted oil directly to your skin. Many people take for granted that essential oils are natural chemicals. And just like the laboratory produced solvents, they can be just as harsh. You wouldn’t place undiluted chlorine on your arms, so why would you place oils on yourself directly from the bottle?

Another thing that many people don’t recognize is that some oils, Citrus Oils and Angelica in particular though there are others, make your skin susceptible to ultraviolet radiation. This is the same radiation that causes sunburns, so before applying any oil check to see if it falls in this category.

Finally, never forget that the development of traditional medicine came from many of the plants used in aromatherapy today. Before beginning a regimen, consult your physician as well as your aromatherapist before starting a treatment.
