Aromatherapy and It’s Uses for Pain Control

Aroma therapy has become increasingly popular as the cost and inconvenience of conventional medicine increase. Even more than the convenience and relative inexpensive nature of aromatherapy, is the appeal of having control over one’s own healthcare again.

Aroma therapy and herbal medicines are two great home remedies for pain control, and while there are many different kinds of pain and many different conditions that cause them, it is clear that in many cases, significant improvement can happen when aromatherapy is used for pain control.

Essential oils of lavender, chamomile and/or marjoram are all wonderful remedies for pain relating to the nerves, and a lesser known but still very promising essential oil is called helichrysum, and has specific implications in treating nerve pain and is also great in treating bruises and hematomas as well.

Some excellent essential oils for joint pain and arthritis would include juniper berry, clove, rosemary, cypress, chamomile and ginger many of these essential oils can be found in many popular remedies that have been used by professional athletes and physical competitors for years.

For pain control of the muscles, including menstrual cramping, some wonderful options for aroma therapy remedies are lavender, chamomile, rosemary, peppermint and of course camphor and wintergreen, the last two being what give most over- the -counter preparations their strong smell that will clear your sinuses as well as relax the muscles.

In short using aromatherapy remedies for pain control is not only personally gratifying but also highly effective in broad spectrum pain control.

Natural Pain Management for Arthritis Pain

Arthritis and Osteo-Arthritis, are believed to affect over 40 million people; And believe it or not that figure includes some 200,000 children.

While Osteo-Arthritis (the wear and tear sort) is far more common, Reumatoid Athritis is part of a bigger Auto-Immune dysfunction and can be far more progressive and destructive.

Many natural pain management strategies have been shown to be markedly effective for Athritis pain, and many herbs have been shown effective in relieving pain.

Many herbs have been shown to be as effective and even surpass the effectiveness of cortisone, at relieving Arthritis pain and inflammation. Ironically, aspirin and other NSAID pain reliever have the side effect of cartilage damage, however when studied, a number of herbs where shown to have the potential to stop and reverse the crippling effects of Arthritis.

In addition to herbal medicine there are also several supplements that have shown to be useful in boosting the rate of cartilage repair. Glucosamine Sulfate, MSM and Omega 3, in addition to several antioxidants, can also assist in slowing the rate of cartilage deterioration and in some cases help to reverse it.

Herbs not only assist in pain management of arthritis but they also help to balance the hormonal and immune systems which are two of the underlying causes for chronic Arthritis pain.

Herbal Medicine and Pain Management

There is a new resurgence in the herbal medicine community with regards to pain management. With the scientific and economic phenomenon of the 20th century, came the overzealous attitude of the medical community that “more is better”. Consequently, we now have a major problem with the “superbugs” due to the overuse of antibiotics, and a growing crisis in this country due to the abuse of prescription pain medication. Oxicontin and Vicodin addiction numbers are at an all time high, so much so that Oxicontin now carries a warning that the patient should keep it locked up securely and not tell anyone that they even are in possession of it and pharmacies are being robbed in record numbers for their drugs.

What people fail to realize is that some of the greatest pain management drugs in the world are in fact herbal. Morphine, Codeine, Oxicontin, and Vicodin are all derivatives of the poppy flower and are so strong that they are regulated by law.

However, many other plants have also been used for hundreds and maybe even thousands of years, for pain management and inflammation treatment. Many of these plants are also anti-spasmotics and anti-inflammatory so that they go beyond mere symptomatic control to actual organic healing.

What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine can be a very complex natural healing modality that uses plants and botanical material as a way to promote natural healing the body, whether physically or emotionally, and can be employed by both human beings and animals.

Herbal medicine has been a part of human civilization for millennia, as long as there has been illness or injury to people (and animals) there has been the steady pursuit of those learned individuals in some of the oldest societies on earth to combat these hardships. Since the beginning of recorded time, and in some cases dating back even farther than that, some of the most successful, readily available and cost effective natural healing products (at least by today’s capitalist standards of operation) have been the fungi, living plants, trees, grasses, and herbs that are all around us.

Today, after the scientific and economical phenomenon, of the pharmaceutical revolution of the 20th century, the plants and herbs used in the natural healing of countless generations of our forbearers has come into a new focus, of respect, and appreciation like a new, admired pillar of the community; And while it is still true that herbal medicine and natural healing mean different things to different people for some very different reasons, herbal medicine is becoming an increasingly integral part of our individual lives and modern medical treatments and solutions also, as more and more doctors are realizing that there truly can be ”to much of a good thing” when it comes to synthetic pharmaceuticals.
