Making Herbal Remedies for Children

As parents we want to do whatever we can to help our children when they are sick, injured or in some other kind of discomfort. Often the conventional medicines found at the pharmacy only suppress symptoms but don’t really do much to support the body, and help it to heal itself.

Making your own remedies for your children is easy, effective and most of the ingredients can be found readily in a health food store, farmers market or even the grocery store. The easiest way to administer your herbal remedies to your little ones is a syrup preparation in a standard baby medicine dropper or spoon, but your herbal medicine preparations can also be mixed in candies, popsicles, or teas.

The first step in making herbal medicine for children is to decoct the herbs of your choice, by simmering the herbs over medium heat for 20 minutes. Then strain the herbs out and return the liquid to the stove, and add half as much honey and simmer over low heat. It is important to not over heat the honey because it kills many of the beneficial enzymes in the honey. It is also important to note that when making an herbal remedy for any child under the age of 1year, that vegetable glycerin is used instead of honey as it can be very hazardous to babies.

Whenever possible we owe it to our children to give them medications that help their bodies work better. So try making your own remedies, you will love it and so will your children.
